exercise 7b Design Media

I took the rooftop screen of my exercise 7a and put it through Grasshopper (for rhino). I used the point attractor to manipulate the apertures of the holes depending on the placement of the point. Again, I used the sunlight system on Vray to render the light performance in the room depending on the time of day.
To create the curved walls I created a curved line along the edge of the roof and a straight line, and lofted the two together.

room with a pool

Last week we studied a single pool in the bathhouse in order to grasp the overall experience the bathhouse evokes, and to communicate it to the class. We drew 1/2" scale plans and sections by hand and created a perspective drawing on photoshop. We then formatted this onto a poster, mine being about 17"x 36".

We also created 1/2" scale sketch models to understand the space as well. I quickly realized how different the space feels. It became a much more tight and intimate type of space.

 Here is the sketch model. I didn't include the depth of the pool, nor the balcony pool that juts out of the window. I decided to add in the balcony after I created the model. I realized sketch models help with creating detail such as this.
The model also helped me realize the need for seating inside of the pool for relaxation.

 Bird's eye view of the model. The white curved roof was a conceptual installation for my Design Media class, however I may want to actually keep it for the bath house.

 This is the 11"x17" poster of the installation mentioned above. This curved roof would be located right on top of the smaller pool that has been inserted inside the larger pool space of the room. This room serves as a secluded contrasted of light to the dark cave-like volume of the main pool space.
 This exercise for the Design Media class integrated all the material we have so far learned in the class including diagramming, unit/system understanding, parametrics, light simulation of rhino/vray. Shown in the poster above, I have a diagram of the sun path of our site. I then cataloged 5 outcomes of my roof system , shown at the top of the poster (using a flashlight and the sketch model).
 Here is a vray rendering of my system in its context, that is, the small room of the main pool.

Field Trip to Mt. Angel Libray by Alvar Aalto

 Alvar Aalto, a brilliant Finnish architect that has heavily influenced the modern movement in architectural history has only two designs in the United States. Luckily, one of them happens to be in Oregon, about an hour and a half away in Mt. Angel!

Here is the beautiful view the library opens up to. Mostly agriculture and some mountains to the right (not shown in the picture).
 The back of the building. Situated on a slope, like many of the surrounding buildings, this back side opens to the trees and the views shown in the image above.

 Perhaps it was because it was a beautiful sunny day, but his use of light was incredibly effective. Even this bottom most area of the library becomes generously lit by clerestory lighting.
 The tall lit space travels from the ceiling all the way to the bottom floor in one continuous bright volume to lighten the whole building. I thought the reflections of the windows upon the walls and bookshelves made an interesting effect as well.
Smooth curvy forms allows for light to be washed against the walls, to soften the light.

 The library has essentially two floors, and one half floor which the couple in the image are walking on. This intermediate level allows for level change to the bottom floor, space for book storage, and study area.
Aalto also designed the furniture for the library including this stool.

Overall, a very fun trip to study spatial organization, use of light, and response to context (views and slope).

Inspiration for bathhouse

Here is the section of Seebad Kaltern that was presented during class, and sparked my imagintation for my own bathhouse. Jutting volumes of water and different qualities of light for each space was the starting point for my design.

Bathhouse sketch model

 Here is my 1/8" sketch model for the bathhouse.
My concept was inspired by the Seebad Kaltern pool, one of the precedent studies presented in my studio.

The bathhouse is separated in two parts: dry and wet.
The wet area, the baths, are placed in a central organization around the main pool at the bottom.

Orange represents the hot baths, blue represents cooler water.
I wanted to achieve a dissipation of light as it pours from a skylight above, through the atrium like space into the bottom pool.
I decided my previous model didn't give the affect I wanted, so I added some extra material to play around with this type of affect of "light bouncing and dissipating". By adding walls jutting into the void space, I was able to create a more "cave-like" feel, in which light may enter in a controlled manner. Pools of water hit the edge of the added wall, which would also be cut into for windows for swimmers to view below. A wall on the bottom left has cool water falling from the wall, into the bottom pool.
My TA suggested to unify the building by putting the abstract forms somehow in the dry areas of the building (massage room, meditation, administration, etc) I played with this idea by creating these forms as walls and ceilings.

Here I'm experimenting with placing the abstract form as a roof, and how light may enter in, in this case, a meditation room.
Here is my extremely messy floor plans I quickly created on autoCAD. The dry spaces are placed in a linear organization, as shown with the arrows, the wet are centralized as mentioned.

Exercise 6b: Rendering and Collage

 For exercise 6b, we rendered an exterior and interior perspective of our bathhouses. This is purely for the practice, and not exactly how I envision my bathhouse to look. In this exercise we focused on light/shadow affects in a building.
I created the rooms/ buildings using mostly extrude and boolean. For the buildings, I used sunlight, and for the interior rooms I used both sunlight and a spotlight to create a more dramatic affect. This was all done in Rhino using the Vray rendering. It was then taken into photoshop.

This is the second time I've rendered on photoshop, compared to my last one (the villa) I think it's progressing which is promising considering I'll be doing this for the rest of architecture school (and beyond ?)

Design Media Exercise 6a

Simulating light on Rhino using Vray rendering. Lately we have been learning Rhino, using techniques such as loft, extrude, flow to surface, and make2D to present things on Ilustrator. This is what i worked on in the morning to study behavior of light in order to implement these ideas into the bathhouse.

Sweden precedent 2

This is a layout of the second part of my precedent study a couple weeks ago on contemporary architecture in Sweden (Stockholm is the location of my site).

lighting studies

Media class we have been studying light patterns formed by a parametric system.
 We cut and folded along the tiling pattern we created which can be found here, shined a light over it, and documented the affects as we bended the paper differently.
By using the cellphone flashlight, the shapes were more crisp and clear, compared to the desk lamp.
some objectives of the study:
To learn to generate systematic affects from a unit operation.
to learn to fabricate something 3D from 2D information.

Here you can kind of see the more dappled type of light the desk lap gives compared to the cellphone flashlight.

 We have finally begun the bathhouse design last week. My professor wanted us to first begin with choosing a spatial organization. In order to understand the space better, I decided to make a very quick sketch model with some paper and crap material. This model is only about 2 inches long.

 Here is the site model a group in the studio worked on (my group was a bit more lucky and was assigned to research contemporary architecture in Sweden instead).
 1/8" model. Our site is located in Stockholm, Sweden. This is Gamla Stan square. Our site is located in that blank spot to the bottom left of the square.
